The first time I arrived in Ireland it was night time. After a twelve-hour flight, I still could not believe I was in Europe for the first time. Nonetheless, it was when I first came out of the plane that it hit me and the second my eyes caught sight of how beautiful the street was, even in the dark, I fell in love. I found it to be remarkably different to my home town, with all its colour, old styled architecture and life. As days pass, that feeling just keeps getting stronger.
We were able to perform numerous activities and expeditions to other parts of the country, such as the Cliffs of Moher, Galway and Glendalough, between others. All these places can only be described as beautiful and majestic; some of the most breathtaking views I had the pleasure to encounter in my life.
Throughout my stay in Ireland, I found myself immersed in their culture and everyday lifestyle. Because of this, I was able to experience the life here in a more unique way. In class, I was taught about Ireland’s local sports, traditional food (a lot of which I got to eat at my host house), famous celebrations and even some of their slang.
However, in my opinion, the richest part of this adventure, when referring to the learning of the culture, was staying in a family’s home. Rosie, Eamonn, Luna and Anu showed me the day-to-day basis of how the life of the Irish is. From the moment I stepped into their residence, I was welcomed with open arms and just after a few days, I felt comfortable and at home. The multiple conversations we had each day were a source of first hand knowledge; from Ireland to Uruguay, I got to see my country with different eyes -the eyes of a foreigner.
However, none can compare to the Celtic Night. I think there is where I fully found myself the happiest and felt in Ireland. The music was fascinating, as well as the dancing. I actually practice Irish and Scottish dance at home, thus seeing it in live, in its traditional form and origin country certainly got me emotional.
All I can say is that this country’s beauty took me by surprise. I did not believe I was going to adore it as much as I did but as I already said, I fell in love with it and its people. One thing I am sure of is that I plan on coming back.
